TraumaSim's Abrasion Deep is a self-adhesive silicone wound prosthetic presenting a deep abrasion — a significant friction or shear wound where substantial skin layers have been removed, exposing the raw, bleeding dermal tissue beneath.

Deep abrasions are among the most common serious soft tissue injuries across a broad range of trauma mechanisms — vehicle incidents (road rash), falls onto hard surfaces, sporting injuries, industrial contact with moving surfaces, and any scenario where high-velocity or high-force contact drags skin across a rough or abrasive surface. The depth and raw tissue exposure of a serious abrasion creates a wound presentation that is visually distinct from a superficial graze — more extensive dermal disruption, more significant bleeding, and a pain and contamination profile that demands active wound management rather than simple dressing.

The deep abrasion profile also presents a clinically meaningful wound assessment differentiation opportunity. A superficial abrasion — graze level — is managed primarily with cleaning and dressing. A deep abrasion with significant dermal exposure may require more extensive irrigation, contamination management, and consideration of deeper tissue involvement depending on the mechanism and location. Training trainees to assess abrasion depth and respond appropriately to deep presentations is a wound assessment skill that general first aid and emergency response programs need to develop.

At 9.5 cm x 13.5 cm x 0.5 cm, the Deep Abrasion is a medium-format prosthetic with a 0.5 cm wound depth — the raw tissue surface sits meaningfully above the skin level, creating realistic texture and depth detail for close-range wound assessment practice. The format suits limb placement — forearms, palms, knees, shins, and shoulders — where deep abrasions from vehicle and fall mechanisms are most commonly encountered.

To complete the casualty presentation, apply Ben Nye stage blood and fresh scab across the wound surface to simulate active weeping or drying tissue response, distress clothing with abrasion-consistent tears and road debris effect, and position the casualty in an environment consistent with the mechanism — roadside for vehicle incidents, sporting field for impact falls, industrial floor for machinery contact.

All TraumaSim silicone wounds are self-adhesive, washable, and reusable. Available individually and as part of TraumaSim moulage kits, including the Advanced Trauma Moulage Kit.

Available in 11 skin tones. Tone 01 Light is shown in product images and held in standard stock. Other tones are manufactured to order — contact TacMed Australia before ordering if a specific tone is required.

  • Deep abrasion wound profile: Significant dermal layer removal with exposed raw tissue — distinct from superficial graze presentations and requiring a different wound management response.
  • 0.5 cm wound depth: Raw tissue surface sits above skin level for realistic texture and depth detail at close-range wound assessment distance.
  • Broad mechanism relevance: Vehicle incidents, falls, sporting injuries, industrial contact — the most common mechanisms producing serious deep abrasion injuries.
  • Develops wound depth assessment skills: Distinct from the superficial Abrasion Small Graze — trains trainees to differentiate abrasion depth and apply appropriate wound management.
  • Medium format suited to limb placement: 9.5 cm x 13.5 cm — forearms, palms, knees, shins, and shoulders where deep abrasions from common trauma mechanisms are most frequently encountered.
  • Self-adhesive silicone construction: Applies directly to skin, manikin surfaces, or clothing without additional adhesives.
  • Tapered edges: Blend naturally into the surrounding surface for seamless presentation.
  • Durable and reusable: Washable silicone construction designed for repeated training use.
  • Available individually and in kits: Included in the Advanced Trauma Moulage Kit and selected other configurations.
  • 11 skin tones available: Tone 01 Light held in standard stock; others manufactured to order.

What injury does this simulate?
A deep abrasion — a significant friction or shear wound where substantial skin layers have been removed, exposing raw dermal tissue beneath. Common mechanisms include vehicle incidents (road rash), falls onto hard or abrasive surfaces, sporting impact injuries, and industrial contact with moving surfaces.

How does this differ from the Abrasion Small Graze?
Depth and severity are the key differences. The Small Graze presents a superficial abrasion — limited skin disruption at surface level requiring basic cleaning and dressing. The Deep Abrasion presents significant dermal layer removal with exposed raw tissue — a wound that requires more active wound management including irrigation, contamination assessment, and potentially deeper tissue consideration depending on mechanism and location. Training trainees to differentiate and respond to each level appropriately is the clinical skill this pairing develops.

What training programs is this suited to?
First aid, emergency response, pre-hospital care, sporting medicine, industrial and workplace health and safety, and any program where soft tissue wound assessment and management are training objectives — particularly those serving organisations with vehicle, outdoor, sporting, or industrial exposure profiles.

Is this a wearable wound or a task trainer?
Neither. This is a self-adhesive silicone wound prosthetic — applied to skin, manikin surfaces, or clothing. It has no internal function or strapping system.

Does it include bleeding capacity?
No. This is a static wound prosthetic. To add bleeding effects, apply Ben Nye Stage Blood and Fresh Scab across the wound surface — simulating active tissue weeping appropriate to a fresh deep abrasion.

How do I apply it?
Peel and apply directly to clean, dry skin, a manikin surface, or clothing. The self-adhesive backing holds without additional adhesive. Tapered edges blend naturally into the surrounding surface.

Is it reusable?
Yes. All TraumaSim silicone wounds are washable and reusable. Clean gently after each use, allow to dry fully, and store flat to maintain the adhesive backing between sessions.

What skin tones are available?
11 tones are available: 00 Porcelain, 01 Light, 02 Medium, 03 Olive, 04 Medium Olive, 05 Rosy, 06 Warm Rosy, 07 Warm Tan, 08 Tan, 09 Dark Tan, and 10 Dark. Tone 01 Light is held in standard stock. Other tones are manufactured to order — contact TacMed Australia before placing your order to confirm availability and lead times.

What are the dimensions and weight?
The prosthetic measures 9.5 cm x 13.5 cm x 0.5 cm and weighs 0.2 kg.

Can I purchase this as part of a kit?
Yes. The Abrasion Deep is included in the TraumaSim Advanced Trauma Moulage Kit. Contact TacMed Australia for details on other kit configurations that include this wound.
