TraumaSim's Laceration Forked Shallow is a self-adhesive silicone wound prosthetic presenting a shallow forked laceration — a branching wound pattern at superficial depth, reflecting the injury characteristics of lower-energy multi-directional cutting or tearing forces where tissue disruption remains within the upper skin layers.

Together with the Laceration Forked Deep, this prosthetic completes a two-variant forked laceration set that allows instructors to train wound depth assessment as a distinct skill — not just wound shape recognition. The forked pattern is the same defining feature across both variants; the depth is the variable. A shallow forked laceration and a deep forked laceration can look broadly similar at a glance, but require different clinical management decisions — and training trainees to assess depth accurately, rather than simply recognising a wound pattern, is a meaningful step up in clinical assessment competency.

The shallow depth profile also reflects a distinct range of injury mechanisms from the deep variant. Where deep forked lacerations suggest higher-energy forces and significant tissue penetration, shallow forked lacerations are more consistent with light sharp implement contact, superficial wire or barbed wire grazing, low-energy multi-point contact, or wounds where the injuring force was partially resisted by clothing or protective equipment. That mechanism differentiation adds scenario design flexibility for instructors building varied casualty profiles.

At 10 cm x 10 cm x 0.3 cm — matching the Deep variant in surface footprint — the two prosthetics can be placed on different body surfaces or used in consecutive training sessions to develop depth assessment consistency and accuracy across repeated scenario exposure.

To complete the casualty presentation, apply Ben Nye stage blood and fresh scab along each wound channel, distress clothing to reflect the mechanism, and position the casualty consistently with the injury scenario. For shallow wound presentations, lighter blood application and less extensive clothing distress more accurately reflect the injury severity than the heavier effects appropriate for deep wound scenarios.

All TraumaSim silicone wounds are self-adhesive, washable, and reusable. Available individually and as part of TraumaSim moulage kits.

Available in 11 skin tones: 00 Porcelain, 01 Light, 02 Medium, 03 Olive, 04 Medium Olive, 05 Rosy, 06 Warm Rosy, 07 Warm Tan, 08 Tan, 09 Dark Tan, and 10 Dark. Commonly requested tones are held in standard stock; others are manufactured to order — contact TacMed Australia before ordering if a specific tone is required.

  • Self-Adhesive Silicone Laceration Forked Shallow
  • User Guide
  • Shallow forked laceration profile: Branching wound channels at superficial depth — reflects lower-energy multi-directional cutting or tearing at the upper skin layer level.
  • Paired with Laceration Forked Deep for wound depth training: Same surface footprint, different depth — enables side-by-side or sequential wound depth assessment training with the same forked wound pattern.
  • Develops depth assessment accuracy: Trainees learn to distinguish shallow from deep wound presentations within the same wound pattern type — a clinical skill beyond simple wound shape recognition.
  • Distinct mechanism range from deep variant: Reflects light sharp implement contact, superficial wire grazing, low-energy multi-point contact, or partially resisted cutting forces.
  • Self-adhesive silicone construction: Applies directly to skin, manikin surfaces, or clothing without additional adhesives.
  • Tapered edges: Blend naturally into the surrounding surface for seamless presentation with no visible border.
  • Compact and versatile: 10 cm x 10 cm — matches the Deep variant in footprint for consistent paired scenario use.
  • Durable and reusable: Washable silicone construction designed for repeated training use.
  • 11 skin tones available: Commonly requested tones held in stock; others manufactured to order.

What injury does this simulate?
A shallow forked laceration — a branching wound pattern at superficial depth, reflecting lower-energy multi-directional cutting or tearing forces where tissue disruption remains within the upper skin layers. Relevant mechanisms include light sharp implement contact, superficial wire or barbed wire grazing, low-energy multi-point contact, and wounds where the injuring force was partially resisted by clothing or protective equipment.

How does this differ from the Laceration Forked Deep?
The wound pattern is the same — both present a forked, branching laceration profile. The difference is wound depth. The Deep variant presents visible tissue disruption below the wound surface, indicating full or significant depth penetration. The Shallow variant presents the forked pattern at superficial depth only. Together, they allow instructors to train depth assessment accuracy within the same wound pattern type — developing a clinical skill beyond wound shape recognition alone.

Why is training shallow versus deep wound differentiation important?
Wound depth has direct clinical management implications — dressing requirements, bleeding risk, deeper structure involvement, and wound closure decisions all vary between shallow and deep lacerations. Trainees who assess depth accurately make better management decisions. Training that presents only surface wound patterns, without depth variation, doesn't develop that accuracy.

Can I use this alongside the Forked Deep variant in the same training session?
Yes — and that's one of the most effective ways to use both. Applying the shallow and deep variants to different body surfaces on the same casualty, or presenting them in consecutive scenarios, develops the direct comparison and depth assessment accuracy that alternating between very different wound types doesn't build as effectively.

Is this a wearable wound or a task trainer?
Neither. This is a self-adhesive silicone wound prosthetic — applied to skin, manikin surfaces, or clothing. It has no internal function or strapping system.

Does it include bleeding capacity?
No. This is a static wound prosthetic. To add bleeding effects, apply Ben Nye Stage Blood and Fresh Scab along each wound channel during scenario setup. For shallow wound presentations, lighter blood application more accurately reflects the injury severity than heavy blood effects.

How do I apply it?
Peel and apply directly to clean, dry skin, a manikin surface, or clothing. The self-adhesive backing holds without additional adhesive. Tapered edges blend naturally into the surrounding surface.

Is it reusable?
Yes. All TraumaSim silicone wounds are washable and reusable. Clean gently after each use, allow to dry fully, and store flat to maintain the adhesive backing between sessions.

What skin tones are available?
11 tones are available: 00 Porcelain, 01 Light, 02 Medium, 03 Olive, 04 Medium Olive, 05 Rosy, 06 Warm Rosy, 07 Warm Tan, 08 Tan, 09 Dark Tan, and 10 Dark. Commonly requested tones are held in standard stock. Other tones are manufactured to order — contact TacMed Australia before placing your order to confirm availability and lead times.

What are the dimensions and weight?
The prosthetic measures 10 cm x 10 cm x 0.3 cm and weighs 0.1 kg.

Can I purchase this as part of a kit?
Yes. TraumaSim silicone wounds are available individually and in kit configurations. Contact TacMed Australia for details.
