TraumaSim's Laceration Open Fat Layer Large is a self-adhesive silicone wound prosthetic presenting a significant full-thickness laceration with exposed subcutaneous fat layer — the larger format variant in the Open Fat Layer range, designed for high-impact wound presentations where wound depth and severity need to communicate immediately and across a broader surface area.
Where the Small variant is well suited to compact limb placement reflecting tool, glass, or sharp implement injuries, the Large format is appropriate for wound presentations where the mechanism has produced more extensive tissue disruption — a longer, deeper laceration from a major sharp force incident, industrial machinery contact, vehicle trauma, or high-energy impact that has opened a significant wound channel through the full skin depth.
The exposed subcutaneous fat layer beneath the wound margins remains the defining clinical feature of this prosthetic — communicating full-thickness penetration at a glance and demanding the wound depth recognition and assessment response that a surface laceration alone doesn't develop. At this larger format, that wound detail is presented across a more prominent surface area, increasing the visual impact of the presentation and making it particularly effective for scenarios where the severity of the injury needs to register immediately on trainee arrival at the scene.
Manufactured from durable, life-like silicone with tapered edges that blend naturally onto skin, manikin surfaces, or clothing. Hand painted — minor variation in painting style between units should be expected.
To complete the casualty presentation, apply Ben Nye stage blood and fresh scab along the wound margins and into the wound face, distress clothing to reflect the mechanism, and position the casualty in an environment consistent with the injury scenario.
All TraumaSim silicone wounds are self-adhesive, washable, and reusable. Available individually and as part of TraumaSim moulage kits.
Available in 11 skin tones: 00 Porcelain, 01 Light, 02 Medium, 03 Olive, 04 Medium Olive, 05 Rosy, 06 Warm Rosy, 07 Warm Tan, 08 Tan, 09 Dark Tan, and 10 Dark. Commonly requested tones are held in standard stock; others are manufactured to order — contact TacMed Australia before ordering if a specific tone is required.
- Self-Adhesive Silicone Laceration Open Fat Layer Large
- User Guide
- Large-format full-thickness laceration with exposed fat layer: More prominent wound surface area than the Small variant — suited to high-impact presentations where wound extent and depth both need to communicate severity.
- Exposed subcutaneous fat layer: Communicates full-thickness wound penetration immediately — develops wound depth recognition and assessment skills beyond surface laceration training.
- High-energy mechanism relevance: Appropriate for major sharp force incidents, industrial machinery, vehicle trauma, and high-energy impact scenarios producing extensive soft tissue disruption.
- Self-adhesive silicone construction: Applies directly to skin, manikin surfaces, or clothing without additional adhesives.
- Tapered edges: Blend naturally onto body surfaces for seamless presentation with no visible border.
- Durable and reusable: Washable silicone construction designed for repeated training use.
- Available individually and in kits: Can be purchased standalone or as part of TraumaSim moulage kit configurations.
- 11 skin tones available: Commonly requested tones held in stock; others manufactured to order.
What injury does this simulate?
A large full-thickness laceration with exposed subcutaneous fat — a significant deep soft tissue wound penetrating through the complete skin depth to reveal the underlying fat layer. Appropriate for major sharp force incidents, industrial machinery contact, vehicle trauma, and high-energy impact mechanisms producing extensive tissue disruption.
How does this differ from the Laceration Open Fat Layer Small?
The wound profile and clinical presentation are the same — full-thickness laceration with exposed subcutaneous fat layer. The difference is format size. The Small is compact and well suited to limb placement for tool, glass, or implement injury scenarios. The Large covers a more prominent surface area for scenarios where the mechanism has produced a more extensive wound requiring higher visual impact on trainee arrival. Both are available to allow instructors to vary wound scale across different scenario profiles.
Why is exposed subcutaneous fat clinically significant for training?
It communicates wound depth beyond surface skin disruption — indicating full-thickness penetration into the subcutaneous layer. This has clinical implications for assessment, management, and wound closure considerations that a surface laceration doesn't present. Training trainees to recognise this wound depth category and respond appropriately is a meaningful clinical skill objective.
Is this a wearable wound or a task trainer?
Neither. This is a self-adhesive silicone wound prosthetic — applied to skin, manikin surfaces, or clothing. It has no internal function or strapping system.
Does it include bleeding capacity?
No. This is a static wound prosthetic. To add bleeding effects, apply Ben Nye Stage Blood and Fresh Scab along the wound margins and into the wound face during scenario setup.
How do I apply it?
Peel and apply directly to clean, dry skin, a manikin surface, or clothing. The self-adhesive backing holds without additional adhesive. Tapered edges blend naturally into the surrounding surface.
Is it reusable?
Yes. All TraumaSim silicone wounds are washable and reusable. Clean gently after each use, allow to dry fully, and store flat to maintain the adhesive backing between sessions.
What skin tones are available?
11 tones are available: 00 Porcelain, 01 Light, 02 Medium, 03 Olive, 04 Medium Olive, 05 Rosy, 06 Warm Rosy, 07 Warm Tan, 08 Tan, 09 Dark Tan, and 10 Dark. Commonly requested tones are held in standard stock. Other tones are manufactured to order — contact TacMed Australia before placing your order to confirm availability and lead times.
What are the dimensions and weight?
The prosthetic measures 7.5 cm x 12.5 cm x 0.2 cm and weighs 0.1 kg.
Can I purchase this as part of a kit?
Yes. TraumaSim silicone wounds are available individually and in kit configurations. Contact TacMed Australia for details on kits that include this wound.
