The TraumaSim Abdominal Subcutaneous Injection Trainer is a clinical skills training aid designed to support accurate, repeatable subcutaneous injection technique practice — in education facilities, simulation centres, and patient-facing environments where building confidence and competency before a live injection matters.
Subcutaneous injection is a routine clinical skill, but for patients managing ongoing conditions requiring self-injection — insulin for diabetes, anticoagulants, biologics — it's a skill they need to perform correctly, consistently, and without anxiety. Low-fidelity alternatives don't build that confidence. This trainer does. The self-healing silicone skin provides a realistic look and feel, with a pinchable injection zone that replicates actual tissue response during subcutaneous needle placement. Trainees practise correct angle, depth, and handling against a surface that responds like skin — not foam or plastic.
The trainer is designed for both role player and manikin use. A removable protection plate sits beneath the silicone skin when worn by a live role player, ensuring user safety during needle practice. Remove the plate for manikin-based training, where the flexible fit accommodates a wide range of manikin types and sizes. Absorbent foam beneath the skin captures injected fluid and is removable, rinsable, and reusable between sessions. The entire unit washes with warm soapy water.
This dual-mode capability makes it genuinely versatile — equally useful for instructor-led clinical skills sessions, simulation centre scenarios, patient education programs, and independent caregiver practice outside of formal training environments.
Simulation-based injection training aligns with best practice recommendations from the International Nursing Association for Clinical Simulation and Learning (INACSL).
Available in 11 skin tones: 00 Porcelain, 01 Light, 02 Medium, 03 Olive, 04 Medium Olive, 05 Rosy, 06 Warm Rosy, 07 Warm Tan, 08 Tan, 09 Dark Tan, and 10 Dark. Customised simulator colours are also available. Commonly requested tones are held in standard stock; others are manufactured to order — contact TacMed Australia before ordering if a specific tone is required. Tone 01 Light shown in product images.

What technique does this trainer develop?
Subcutaneous injection technique — correct needle angle, insertion depth, tissue pinch, and handling. It's designed for clinical skills education, nursing and medical training programs, and patient education where ongoing self-injection competency is required.
Can it be worn by a live role player?
Yes. The included protection plate sits beneath the silicone skin during role player use, protecting the wearer from needle contact. The trainer secures around the abdomen and is designed for comfortable wear during training sessions.
How does it work on a manikin?
Remove the protection plate and the trainer fits flexibly across a wide range of manikin types and sizes. It integrates with broader simulation scenarios and can be used alongside other TraumaSim task trainers and manikin simulation products.
What does self-healing silicone mean?
Self-healing silicone closes after needle insertion — the puncture site doesn't remain visibly open or degrade with repeated use in the way that non-healing materials do. This maintains the realistic appearance and tactile response of the injection zone across multiple training iterations.
What is the absorbent foam for?
The foam layer beneath the silicone skin captures injected fluid during training, preventing it from passing through to the wearer or manikin. Two foam inserts are included — remove, rinse, dry, and replace between sessions.
Is this suitable for patient education?
Yes — this is one of its primary applications. For patients newly diagnosed with conditions requiring ongoing subcutaneous self-injection, practising on a realistic wearable trainer significantly reduces anxiety and builds correct technique before the first live injection. It's equally suitable for caregiver training.
How is it cleaned?
Wash the entire unit with warm soapy water. The absorbent foam inserts are removable and can be rinsed and dried independently between sessions.
What skin tones are available?
11 tones are available: 00 Porcelain, 01 Light, 02 Medium, 03 Olive, 04 Medium Olive, 05 Rosy, 06 Warm Rosy, 07 Warm Tan, 08 Tan, 09 Dark Tan, and 10 Dark. Custom simulator colours are also available on request. Commonly requested tones are held in standard stock. Other tones and custom colours are manufactured to order — contact TacMed Australia before placing your order to confirm availability and lead times.
What are the dimensions and weight?
The trainer measures 45 cm x 25 cm x 10 cm and weighs 3 kg.
Who is this suited to?
Nursing and medical education programs, clinical simulation centres, hospital education departments, community health organisations, general practice settings, and any environment delivering subcutaneous injection skills training — including direct patient and caregiver education.
