TacMed Australia now stocks the Combat Application Tourniquet (C.A.T) – Gen 7, the latest generation of the world-renowned bleeding control device. Building on the trusted Gen 6 design, the Gen 7 introduces a new single routing buckle for faster application, reduced blood loss, and fewer windlass turns — simplifying training and real-world use with a single protocol standard.
The C-A-T is a compact, lightweight arterial tourniquet designed to fully occlude blood flow in a limb. It features a self-adhering band and friction adaptor buckle for broad size compatibility, and a durable one-handed windlass system that delivers true circumferential pressure. Once tightened, the windlass is secured with a Windlass Clip and reinforced with a Hook-and-Loop Strap, ensuring stability during patient movement.
Note: The blue colour variant is typically used for training purposes.
- Proven Performance: Approved by the U.S. Army Institute of Surgical Research
- Quick Application: One-handed design for rapid self-use or assisted deployment
- Durable Construction: Engineered for extreme conditions and repeated field use
- Compact Design: Lightweight, low-profile — fits easily into IFAKs and gear pouches
- Globally Trusted: Used by military, law enforcement, and emergency responders worldwide
What is the C-A-T® Tourniquet used for?
The C-A-T® Tourniquet is used to stop life-threatening bleeding from limbs. It's a standard component in trauma kits, especially for treating arterial bleeds in emergencies.
Can the C-A-T® Tourniquet be self-applied?
Yes. It's designed for effective one-handed application, making it suitable for self-care in critical situations.
Is the C-A-T® Tourniquet reusable?
No. It is intended for single-use only in real-world emergencies. However, the blue version is ideal for training and repetition practice.
What makes the C-A-T® Tourniquet different?
The C-A-T® Tourniquet is a lightweight, compact, one-handed tourniquet with a single routing buckle and polymer windlass, designed for rapid self-application and widely used by first responders worldwide.
Is the C-A-T® Tourniquet suitable for civilian use?
Yes. While it’s widely used by military and first responders, the C-A-T® Tourniquet is also ideal for civilian first aid kits, workplaces, vehicles, and outdoor activities where severe bleeding emergencies may occur.
How does the C-A-T® Tourniquet compare to the SOF® Tourniquet?
Both are TCCC-recommended and proven in combat and emergency care. The C-A-T® uses a lightweight polymer windlass and is slightly more compact, while the SOF® uses a rugged metal windlass and a quick-release buckle. Both are reliable — the choice often comes down to user preference and environment.
Does the C-A-T® Tourniquet expire?
Tourniquets don’t “expire” like medications, but they should be inspected regularly for wear, UV damage, or material fatigue. For professional use, many agencies recommend rotation every few years or after exposure to harsh conditions.
How long can you leave a C-A-T® Tourniquet on?
Tourniquets can generally be left in place for several hours, but they should only be applied in life-threatening bleeding situations and removed by trained medical professionals. Always seek urgent medical attention after application.
