The Snake Bite Bandage is a premium pressure immobilisation bandage designed specifically for the Pressure Immobilisation Technique (PIT) — the recommended first aid treatment for all Australian venomous snakebites, as specified by the Australian Resuscitation Council. Unlike standard crepe bandages, the Snake bite bandage has built-in tension indicators that show when correct compression has been achieved during application.
The pressure indicators work by changing shape as the bandage is stretched — when applied at the correct tension, the printed markers reach a specific shape, giving the responder real-time feedback that compression is within the effective range. This removes the guesswork from a technique where both under-tightening (ineffective) and over-tightening (restricts circulation) produce poor outcomes.
At up to 10 metres in length, a single bandage provides enough coverage for most limb applications. For large limbs or bites high on the leg or arm, two bandages are typically required — carrying two is recommended in any snake-prone environment.
The Snake Bite Bandage is also the recommended bandage for Funnel Web Spider bites, Blue Ringed Octopus stings, and Cone Shell stings — any Australian envenomation where pressure immobilisation is the indicated first aid response.
For a complete snakebite response kit including triangular bandage, permanent marker, and gauze swab, see the TacMed Snake Bite Kit.
- Pressure immobilisation bandage: Purpose-built for PIT technique — not a general-purpose elastic bandage repurposed for snakebite use.
- Built-in tension indicators: Printed markers change shape during application to confirm correct compression — removes guesswork from a pressure-sensitive technique.
- 10 metre length: Sufficient coverage for most adult limbs in a single bandage. Two bandages recommended for large limbs or high-limb bites.
- ARC-guidelines compliant: Meets Australian Resuscitation Council recommendations for pressure immobilisation technique.
- Suitable for all PIT indications: Recommended for Australian snakebites, Funnel Web Spider bites, Blue Ringed Octopus stings, and Cone Shell stings.
- Heavyweight conforming material: Stretchable for consistent application and durable enough to maintain compression during patient movement and transport.
- Compact and lightweight: Fits in any first aid kit, backpack, vehicle kit, or remote area medical setup.
- Single use: Replace after every use — elasticity and sterility cannot be guaranteed after use.
What is a Snake Bite bandage?
The Snake Bite Bandage is the version configured for pressure immobilisation technique — it features printed tension indicators that change shape when the correct compression for PIT is achieved. The Snake Bite bandages are widely used in Australian snakebite first aid because the indicator system makes correct application more reliable, particularly for responders who haven't practised the technique recently.
How does the pressure indicator work?
The bandage has printed geometric shapes — typically rectangles or ovals — that change shape as the bandage is stretched during application. When applied with insufficient tension, the shapes remain rounded. As the correct pressure range is reached, the shapes elongate to a specific target form. This gives the person applying the bandage real-time visual feedback that they are within the effective compression range for PIT, without needing to guess or estimate by feel.
Is the bandage different from a regular high-compression bandage?
Yes. Standard high-compression or crepe bandages are designed for general wound management and venous compression — different compression targets to the PIT technique for snakebite. The Snake Bite Bandage is calibrated specifically for the pressure range required by PIT and includes the tension indicators to confirm correct application. Using a general-purpose elastic or crepe bandage is not equivalent and may result in incorrect pressure.
Can this bandage be used for spider bites and marine stings?
Yes. The pressure immobilisation technique is the recommended first aid response for Funnel Web Spider bites, Blue Ringed Octopus stings, and Cone Shell stings in addition to Australian snakebites. The premium snake bite bandage is suitable for all of these indications. Always seek emergency medical care immediately after application.
How many bandages do I need?
For most adult limb bites, one bandage (10 metres) is sufficient if the bite is on the lower leg or forearm. For bites higher on the limb — upper arm, thigh — or for larger patients, two bandages are typically required to provide adequate coverage from the bite site up to the groin or armpit. Carrying two bandages is recommended in any snake-prone environment. If you are building a complete snakebite kit, consider the TacMed Snake Bite Kit which includes additional components alongside the bandage.
Can this bandage be reused?
No. This bandage is a single-use item. Reusing it compromises the elasticity, which affects both the compression level achieved and the reliability of the pressure indicators. The tension indicators are calibrated to the bandage in its original state — a used or rewashed bandage will not give accurate indicator readings. Replace after every use, including training use.
How long should the bandage stay on?
The bandage should remain in place until removed by medical professionals. Do not loosen or remove it in the field — doing so can cause a rapid increase in venom absorption as the lymphatic system resumes normal flow. Record the time of application and communicate this to emergency services on arrival.
Is this the same as the high-compression bandage used in wound care?
The snake bite bandage is specifically configured for pressure immobilisation technique — the compression target and indicator calibration are different from the wound care products. If you are purchasing for snakebite use, confirm you are ordering the snake bite / PIT variant.
What is the difference between this bandage and the snake bite kit?
This product is a premium snake bite indictator bandage only. The TacMed Snake Bite Kit includes this bandage plus a calico triangular bandage for limb immobilisation, a permanent marker for recording bite time, a sterile gauze swab, and a CPR reference card — all vacuum-sealed together. If you already carry a triangular bandage and want to supplement with additional snake bite bandages, buying this product individually is the right option. If you are building a snakebite kit from scratch, the complete kit is the simpler starting point.
